Skincare, skincare oh don’t we all love good skincare? I could live days without chocolates and cakes but defo NOT without my skincare routine. That’s probably why my entire social media is filled with tips and tricks for good skincare and now that we are all at home during this lockdown, we could spend more time doing the things we’ve forgotten over the period of years – to take care of ourselves and our well-being. This is a great time to reflect, care and love ourselves a little better each day.

Being indoors is certainly great for your skin because we are in less contact with air-pollution, harsh sun rays and uses less makeup or NO makeup at all however though, the downfall of it is we are more exposed to air conditioning full time + unhealthy meal day and night + consume alcohol beverages/carbohydrate drinks to cope with the quarantine blues. Let’s get to the meat of this article today.

How to take care of your skin in quarantine?

With the pandemic at hand leaving us all in crisis, our skin is also adjusting to the new changes of being indoors and your skin is a reflection of who you are. Again, what can you do to take care of your skin during this quarantine?

1| Wash your hands regularly. It’s not rocket science people, this is something that was taught to us by our forefathers – grandparents – parents to wash our hands before we eat, after using the loo and even before applying skincare on our naked face. The number-one COVID-19 preventive measure is to wash your hands, so naturally, by now you will be washing your hands more often than you used to. However, always remember to moisturize your hands after washing.

healthy sleeping behavior includes falling asleep easily within 15-20 minutes of lying down to sleep

2| Get enough sleep. It may sound simple yet we have easily drifted away because with a lot of free time in our hands we easily pick up the phone and look through Youtube videos and little do you know 3 hours have passed and yet, we are awake at 3 AM. This disturbs our sleeping patterns and we will start developing under-eye bags and dark circles, I mean you don’t want to end up looking like a zombie at the end of this quarantine period. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body will release more cortisol (the stress hormone) that can cause acne or PCOS weight gain. I’m speaking to my fellow PCOS ladies here, so sleep early for a productive day tomorrow.

3| Cut down on snack habits. I see you girl! You’re smiling behind your screen right now. We’re all down this road of ‘snacking’ at ? 2 AM ahem, I do this too. But let’s be straight, esp when I advocate for PCOS women, this brings up the insulin level then we know what happens next – PCOS acne befalls! ❌No, no, no. An unhealthy snack habit reflects on our skin through breakout and zits. So, cut it down and portion them in balanced.

4| Moisturise your skin. Staying indoors DOES NOT mean you let your skin free without any moisturizer on. Don’t neglect the skincare friends, it’s important to keep your pH value balanced because we will be spending more time sitting under air-conditioning for a longer period of time and our skin will be exposed to dry air. So moisture away!

5| Take Your Vitamins. Signs of stay-at-home skin include tired-looking eyes, sagging skin and appearance of sallow, colorless skin. These are signs of decreased blood flow due to a lack of movement and exposure to sunlight, which helps the body produce Vitamin D. Unfortunately we don’t have this enough. Alternatively, take your vitamin C, it helps to heal damaged skin and, in some cases, reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Sufficient vitamin C intake can also help repair and prevent dry skin. Hooray!!

6| Practice facial massage. Lean on extra on your skincare during this COVID-19 lockdown. Take time to massage your facial muscles as it liminates impurities from the skin. I’ve been using the facial roller these days and it’s been great! According to Girl Boss, face rollers are touted as an effective tool for achieving clear skin that’s not puffy. Plus, advocates say that rolling the stones across the skin can drain excess fluids from the face, help skincare products better absorb into the skin, and even combat wrinkles. So why don’t you give it a try!

Regardless of the chaos the world, stay healthy, and keep yourself hydrated. Every skincare works when we flush out the toxins in our body so drink more water and keep your mind composed during this time. I hope you are safe and well folks, till we meet again. Praying for your country!
